Trousergate
Shag who you want, so long as they want it too.
Now we've got THAT out of the way, how about we address the ACTUAL issue of these sexual issues in our Parliaments.
You simply can't engage in these activities with people over whom you hold an unfair and unchallengable position of power. I'm not even sure I worded that correctly, but it's really not that hard of a concept. If you can get someone sacked but yourself remain safe and untouchable, keep your hands to yourself!
Women have a hard enough time getting into politics as it is without being put into compromising positions, simply because they are subordinates to a member of the Government. Even if the person is part of the Opposition, it's not frickin good enough!
I have seen this dynamic play out in my tertiary education where certain academics took advantage of their status to manipulate, coerce, favour and behave inappropriately towards the undergrad students. Sure, at this point they are both adults, capable of making their own choices, but the power balance is not in fact balanced! Students are at the mercy of lecturers for marks, their education, even their position within the course. My academic career was certainly within a boys club Department, even to the extent that during my postgrad days as a tutor, because of my enthusiasm for my students, I was quizzed as to which of them I was sleeping with...an assumption that somewhat blew my mind.
Quite aside from slimy academics preying on impressionable students, let me return to politics.
Again, I repeat, we shouldn't be caring who is having sex with who, that's effectively the argument made by those of us who supported Same Sex Marriage. It's none of our business and to comment, judge or accuse. But in the work place it should be declared at the very least.
In the current political environment where we can't even trust our Federal Government with day to day decisions because of their tendency to rort the system, favour their mates, finance programs based on conditions more focused on fluffing up marginal seats than legitimate eligibility, having Ministers engaging in sexual liaisons with their non-elected staff is really just the icing on the cake.
A cake that tastes shit.
